Siena, the Maremma Sheepdog

A new breed for Riviera Dogs. A Maremma sheepdog or more correctly, a Pastore Maremano Abruzzese from the Maremma region of Italy. They are guardians of a flock - independent-thinking dogs and incredibly intelligent. You can probably see that this breed was probably related to the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Click on link to read more.

This is Siena, who is only 5 months old. She was born in Italy and now lives in Vence.

I love your portrait photo; what a beautiful face. Judging from the info on the link, it sounds like he needs a very firm hand though.

I used to think that all dogs from a certain group (sheepdogs, herders, etc. in this case) had similar temperaments, but I'm learning that that is not the case. I had a Shetland Sheepdog as a child who was extremely intelligent, but using a really firm hand with him would have been a huge mistake. He responded much better to gentle discipline, which I think is true of most Shelties.

It's always curious to me how and why dogs seem to differ so much more than cats, even within the same type/group of dog. I'm no cat expert, so I'm sure there are some cat lovers out there who might beg to differ!

My friend has these dogs to protect her Alpaca's. They do an incredible job, they are working dogs, and very beautiful. Her dogs caused quite a stir recently when hungry mountain lions, came on to the ranch, the dogs jumped the fences and chased the poor big cats, one cat got away the other did not. sigh.

Martha Steward, has them also to protect her goats.

Our dog Ruby is a Maremma, She is by far the smartest dog I have ever had in my life (and the most stubborn) I can not say enough good things about her. One of her greatest quality's is how she looks after my two boy, she very rarely lets them out of her site.
